Housed within the monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial in Spain, rests an original Book of Chess, Dice and Tables or commonly known as simply The Book of Games (Libros de los Juegos). Because of the title, this enlightening collection of 98 leaves of parchment is often overlooked. Completed in 1283 by Alfonso X of Castile, theBook of Games contains detailed instructions for the playing of games. Read allegorically however, the book can be seen as sharing valuable knowledge concerning life.
Alfonso X
Alfonso X (1221-1284), King of Castile from 1252 until his death, was often referred to as Alfonso the Wise because of his devotion to learning. Working closely with the Toledo School of Translators, Alfonso X authorized many translations and works to be done during his reign. His knowledge and reverence for study can be appreciated through the texts he chose to produce. The Book of Games is one of these prized creations.
In the beginning of the Book of Games the reader is told God has a desire for man to be happy. In searching for happiness, man created games as one way to enjoy themselves. They created and played games which involved horseback riding and weapons used in fun. Other active games included fencing, hitting and throwing balls, or jumping. However these types of sport excluded some players and so sitting games were established. These allowed, in any kind of weather, the old and the young, the men and the women, the opportunity to play. It is written Alfonso X chose to document these types of games, like chess, dice and tables because they were ‘made most beautifully.’
